2023 Reading Club: “Heavy: An American Memoir” by Kiese Laymon. A letter written by Kiese to his mother: “ Please do not be mad at me, Mama”. Presented by Jocelyn Brown, MD & Howard Dubowitz, MD
Presenters: Jocelyn Brown, MD & Howard Dubowitz, MD
Description: Heavy, a beautifully written evocative memoir of a Black boy then man growing up in Mississippi, is painful and illuminating. A must read! We’ll focus on a few key themes related to child maltreatment and family violence. What do we learn about Black culture and parenting, about strengths or protective factors, and about confronting the past, honestly? We’ll end with a discussion of resilience and of other feelings and thoughts that may be useful in our professional work.
