Please join APSAC in congratulating Dr. John Fluke for the APSAC Mark Chaffin Outstanding Research Career Achievement Award. Dr. John Fluke is a true pioneer in child maltreatment research and a global leader in advancing child welfare knowledge.For more than four decades, Dr. Fluke has shaped the field of child protection through groundbreaking work in child maltreatment epidemiology, decision-making research, and child welfare administrative data analysis. His research has informed policies and practice in the U.S. and internationally, improving systems for protecting children and strengthening services for vulnerable families.
Dr. Fluke has led and contributed to major research initiatives with U.S. federal agencies, including the Children’s Bureau and the Department of Health and Human Services, as well as UNICEF, the Public Health Agency of Canada, and numerous international organizations. His work has advanced understanding of child welfare decision-making, disparities, and outcomes, while helping to build data infrastructures that are critical for prevention and protection efforts worldwide.
A prolific scholar, mentor, and collaborator, Dr. Fluke has authored over 70 peer-reviewed publications, numerous book chapters, and co-edited influential volumes on child protection systems and decision-making in child welfare. His leadership extends beyond research, as an active board member of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect and the European Scientific Association on Residential and Family Care.
