APSAC is here to support you in identifying way to acknowledge April as Child Abuse Prevention Month, even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. While physical health and safety is taking priority, advocates may be able to find opportunities to promote child safety as April approaches.
One traditional approach to Child Abuse Prevention Month is to ask the Mayor to issue a proclamation declaring it Child Abuse Prevention Month in your city or county. While it is possible that municipal offices have shut down their public information office except for focusing on public health, it may be worth inquiring if the mayor’s office would consider a request to issue a proclamation, which could then be shared virtually on social media, and send with a press release to traditional media.
To that end, APSAC has prepared a draft proposal for a proclamation, including clauses specific to the COVID-19 pandemic. Please feel free to use as-is, or edit in any way you find appropriate. The document includes a link to find the number of child abuse cases in your state for 2018. Number of cases for smaller jurisdictions, like cities, are usually available from state government, but it is likely that staff are unavailable to provide that information.
