Achieving Racial Justice in Child Welfare Institute: Examining the Past and Reimagining the Future
We will spend the day looking back at our past, interrogating the present, and reimagining our future. We will use a racial equity lens to explore how a history of racism continues to impact the Child Welfare system, and foster disparities and inequities. Together through open dialogue and discussion we will generate recommendations to change our behaviors, systems, and the field.
Presenters: Ernestine C. Briggs-King, PhD, Rocio Chang-Angulo, PsyD
Making Advocacy Relevant for all Disciplines and Cultures
This full day workshop will include an overview of the relevancy of 1) the new NCA standards for Children’s Advocacy Centers and their team members that take effect Jan 1, 2023; 2) the newly released APSAC child forensic interviewing guidelines, and 3) efforts to assure all mental health services are evidence-based while striving for cultural relevance. Providing trauma-informed victim support and family advocacy is an essential component for serving children and families who have experienced maltreatment and for positive National Children’s Alliance (NCA) accreditation outcomes. The workshop will give an overview of the 12 NCA required components of Victim Support and Advocacy with a special focus on the 3 new components. Additionally the workshop will highlight the relevant new additions to the APSAC 2022 guidelines for interviewing to assure that all professionals understand the scientific reasons for advancing practice and to provide an additional tool when communicating practices when team members are not aware of the changes in best practices. Lastly, this workshop will address the incredible efforts and findings that evidence-based mental health can be made culturally relevant and disseminated to largely underserved communities.
